Do you REALLY know where your nutrition/ health information comes from?

Ya'll- I always get kicked in the ass when I make assumptions. It happened today. You would think with all of my education and experience surrounding health that I would do my research BEFORE I assume. Nope, not a chance. I still assume (want) people to be who they say that are. I am a pain in the ass and high maintenance as hell, but I am honest. Sometimes to a fault. I assume others are as well.

Nope. So disappointing.

Although the internet is an amazing resource, it is also full of bullshit. It is really stinkin' hard to figure out what is legit and what is not. I teach an entire section on this-how to validate health information sources.

Recently I have had many requests to provide nutrition coaching, so I began researching what is available and reliable for referrals once I am fully booked. In the world of functional fitness there are three main nutrition sources that charge for services. These are all well funded, presumably well intentioned, and extremely popular. They are all comparably priced (~200 per month for one on one coaching via the internet). Of the three, only one has at best a Masters level degree owner/ CEO (not even related to nutrition), and none have doctorate level oversight. This was ASTOUNDING to me. Depending on your state, there are almost no restrictions on who can give nutrition advice. The caveat is that only registered dietitians (RD) can give medical nutrition advice. Other than that it's fair game. So basically that $200 you may be paying per month could be coming from anyone. Holy shit.

That being said, PLEASE make sure you do your research. Because of this, I have agreed to take on a limited number of clients for nutrition coaching. This is not something I love doing BECAUSE most people want a miracle. I have already given you the secrets to success in my blog posts. However, if you are truly, intrinsically motivated and want guidance, then I will be glad to offer my services. I learned long ago that you cannot motivate people. They either want it or they don't. If you want it, you will be successful and I can show you how. If you don't, there is no magic bullet that will.

Here are my options:

You must do an initial consultation with any plan. This is where we get to know each other and I take an EXTENSIVE history of your health, fitness and nutrition background. This is $150. Both plans can be administered remotely.

1- Three-month diet plan to follow based on the initial consultation $200

2- Three-month one on one with me that includes a customized,

specific plan with 2x per week check-ins based on the initial consultation $400

Nutrition coaching with me will include the following, so jump ship now if this is not up your alley:

You must take before and after progress photos.

You must have your body composition tested before and at three month intervals (at UNCA- they charge $35 for invaluable information)

You must weigh and measure your food.

You must be completely and totally honest with me and yourself.

And you must trust me and do exactly as I say.

No exceptions!

Eating well really is simple, but it can be confusing and difficult. I am taking a limited number of clients for now. I want to make sure I can give each of you the time and attention you deserve. I may have slots remaining. Please email me if you want further clarification or if you need additional information.

That being said, you know your body best. When researching any health related information, please look for the following:

Well stated qualifications, degrees, and experience. Any nutrition information needs to be in the heath science, public health, nutrition, sport nutrition, etc. fields. Registered Dietitians are the only professionals who can provide nutrition information in regards to medical conditions in North Carolina. Most states are WAY more lenient than this. Most physicians have very limited nutrition education unless it is a specialty of theirs.

Any medical condition information needs to be provided by a medical doctor, nurse practitioner, physician's assistant, or registered dietician (RD). Again, like medical doctors these professions have specialties. Just because someone is an RN doesn't mean they have any additional nutrition knowledge.

Be wary of "nutrition" certifications. They are BS and mean nothing. Also beware of highly skilled athletes selling nutrition information. Just because you are good at a sport, doesn't mean you know how to prescribe nutrition information.

All of this said, I am sure there are plenty of non credentialed people who can provide good nutrition information. However, how can you be sure? That is not a chance I am willing to take.

I also have a handful of nutrition certifications that I won't mention because they really were useless. I am a busy mom of four (with a son who is not yet 1), a student, a professor, a business owner, and an athlete in the best shape of my life at 42. I practice what I preach.
