Exercise because you can, not because you should.

In keeping with yesterday's theme- let's talk a bit about why you should exercise... again.

Today I did the hero workout Bowen. For those of you that don't CrossFit, a hero workout is a particularly hard workout that is named after a fallen hero. This one is particularly special to me because it is in honor of a fallen Asheville firefighter. While I did not know Jeff Bowen, my husband is an Asheville firefighter, and I do know several firefighters who worked with Jeff.

I have done this workout every year since Jeff Bowen died seven years and each year it is brutal. It is:

Captain Jeffrey Bowen, of Alexander, North Carolina, died July 28, 2011. The 37-year-old was a 13-year veteran of the Asheville Fire Department, assigned to Rescue 3. Bowen was fatally injured while fighting a four-alarm fire in a medical building. He is survived by his wife, Stacey; son, Charlie Ray; and daughters, Robin Parker and Sarah.

You can watch the tribute video here.

It is always done in July when it is hot and it is long. It has a 30 minute time cap. This year it took me 22:02.

The CrossFit Hero workouts are some of the most intense workouts that you can experience. They are intended to be performed with intense effort, in honor of our fallen Heroes. Don't think of yourself. Instead think about the Hero that has given his all for our freedom. At the end of the day you get to go home to your family and on with your life. They do not.

This is a perfect example of why I exercise. Simply because I can. We are givien this amazing life and an amazing vessel within which to live it. Take advantage of every single moment while you still can.
